Biography

My story is never short.

You don’t live as long as I have without having a long, long story.

I am passionate about writing. I was trained as a journalist, wrote freelance in Europe for a while, and then became a psychologist.

However, this is not my story.

I wrote for my newspaper in high school, then participated in the Ford Motor Company National Journalism Scholarship (1960!). I won 4th place, enough to pay for my college, and ensure my love for writing for life.

Nevertheless, this is not my story.

I worked hard as a psychologist and coach. Then I discovered I could make a living writing newsletters for other executive coaches. I founded Customized Newsletter Services in 1999 and continue to provide that service to a great group of professionals.

This is my story…

One day my husband and I decided to move to Lake Chapala, Mexico and (sort of) retire. We bought a home and sold everything we could. I stopped all career activities (psychological testing, coach training for therapists) and kept the newsletter business because I could do it online from Mexico.

Lesson #1 Change is good. Technology is great!

I earn money working from home and play tennis every day! No commuting, no office to go to, just writing, and making money with plenty of time for fun.

Lesson #2: Fun is important to me. Learning is important too, and when I’m constantly learning, I have fun.

Lesson #3: If I am going to work hard, I prefer to be working for myself.

Here’s some more of my story.

One day I hired a marketing coach, Denise Wakeman, to help me get my business Customized Newsletters found by the people who needed my services.

Denise helped me master the powerful KickStartCart all-in-one database management system for my business.

Lesson #4: You CAN earn money while you sleep. The Cart makes it possible for new orders to be processed and delivered automatically.

Lesson #5: Writing is key. You have to have a number of information products, reports, ebooks, to offer clients in order to have sales. Hence, writing is crucial.

One day I was home on my birthday (Sept. 4, 2004) and couldn’t play tennis because of an injury. I was frustrated, because I couldn’t update my web pages myself.

I was writing an ebook on how to do an ezine, and I wanted to post something about that on my website.

I got an email promoting blogs for businesses. It said “Any idiot can set up a blog and start posting on the Internet within an hour.”

That resonated with me. I’d been called worse than a “techno-idiot” by my husband. I went to Typepad and set up this blog; and was published on the Internet within a couple of hours.

I emailed Denise to tell her, and lights went off. We both immediately saw the potential for other professionals who want to be in control of their web pages and get their messages out to a global audience.

Within 6 months Denise and I had formed The Blog Squad, wrote a book on how to Build a Better Blog, were blogging daily on 3-4 blogs, and had an audience of people asking questions about this “new fad.”

This is where the story gets interesting.

Within 2 years we had tripled our revenues, grew our database list of prospects ten fold, and were incorporated as full partners.

I moved back to San Diego, and we continue to provide all sorts of Internet marketing and services to busy professionals like you.

Blogs are not the message, just like a map is not the terrain.

And just because you buy a pair of new shoes, it doesn’t mean you can dance!

Anyone can set up and write on a blog; making your blog work for business is an art and a science.

A business blog is essential, and there’s more to getting results than you might think.
